Graphics: Marks with Room to Breathe
Contrast stripe widths, corner geometry, and negative space around tank badges so custom markings look poised rather than crowded.
Single, Double, and Boxed Pinstripe Proportions
On a motorcycle panel, a pinstripe acts as an optical lens between two larger surfaces. If you lay two identical 4 mm stripes side by side around a knee panel, the human eye struggles to decide which line is the boundary and which is the echo, creating a buzzing visual vibration. Classic factory and custom coachbuilders solve this by pairing a heavy primary line with a fine secondary hairline separated by a measured gap of base colour.
A dependable starting ratio for a fourteen-litre to eighteen-litre fuel tank is a 4.5 mm outer line, a 3 mm gap of basecoat, and a 1.5 mm inner hairline. Place the heavier line toward the outside perimeter of the tank to contain the silhouette, or place the heavier line against the two-tone colour step to mask any minor paint edge build-up before clearcoating.
Corner Turn Geometry
Avoid sharp 90-degree mitred tape corners on curved tanks unless the bodywork itself has folded origami creases. A gentle 12 mm to 20 mm internal corner radius lets the eye follow the line around the panel without stalling.
Decal Placement and Clearance Zones
Whether you are applying water-slide transfers, airbrushing stencil lettering, or laying ultra-thin 50-micron cast vinyl decals prior to clearcoat, placement height dictates how heavy the tank appears. Centering a logo dead-middle between the top spine and bottom seam almost always makes the graphic look too low once viewed from standing height, because the curved upper shoulder foreshortens.

01
The Optical Centre Rule (55/45 Split)
Position tank script or roundels slightly above the mathematical vertical midpoint—roughly 55% up from the lower tank seam—so the badge sits on the widest outward swell of the metal.
-
02
Breathing Margin Around Borders
Maintain a minimum clearance equal to the cap-height of your lettering (typically 20 mm to 30 mm) between the ends of the decal and any surrounding pinstripe or panel edge.

Level Datum vs. Tank Slope
Horizontal wordmarks should either align with the true ground horizon when the bike is on its wheels or match the lower tank seam—never split the difference at an accidental 3-degree tilt.
Graphic Medium Comparison for Custom Planning
| Graphic Method | Edge Character & Step Height | Best Application Zone |
|---|---|---|
| Hand-Laid Enamel / Urethane Brushwork | Organic tapered terminals, gentle crown profile, unmistakable hand craft. | Over or under clearcoat on mudguard tips, coachlines, and scroll accents. |
| Plotted Paint Mask (Sprayed Graphic) | Zero vinyl thickness; only a thin pigment film step that buries cleanly under two coats of clear. | Large tank lettering, number boards, and multi-layered geometric logos over compound curves. |
| 2-Mil Cast Vinyl Decal | Crisp printed or solid colour edge; requires extra clearcoat build and flow-coat sanding to hide the edge step. | Flatter side covers, tail cowls, and mild single-curve tank flanks. |
