FAQ: Paintwork Decisions, Explained
Direct answers to the layout, proportion, decal, and finish questions riders face before ordering paint or booking booth time.
Geometry & Masking Layout
How do I keep left and right tank stripes symmetrical when the filler cap is offset?
Never measure outward from an offset filler cap. Stretch a piece of low-tack tape from the centre of the front tank mount (behind the steering stem) straight back to the centre of the rear hold-down bolt. Use that true chassis spine as your datum for left and right measurements—or lean into the offset by running an asymmetric stripe down the opposite side of the tank to balance the cap's visual weight.
Why does a straight tape line look curved when I step back from the bike?
Fuel tanks bulge outward in three dimensions simultaneously. A strip of tape laid under even tension follows the shortest geodesic path across the dome, which often dips visually toward the rear. Always view the bike from three metres away at waist height and adjust the tape arch until it reads straight to the eye.
Should front mudguard stripes match the width of the centre tank stripe?
Usually a front mudguard is significantly narrower and more tightly crowned than the fuel tank. Narrowing the mudguard spine stripe by 15% to 20% compared to the main tank ribbon keeps the proportion feeling consistent rather than crowding the tyre edges.
Pinstripes, Badges & Decals
What is a versatile pinstripe width for a standard motorcycle fuel tank?
For a single bridging stripe between two colours, 3 mm (1/8 inch) is clean and understated. For a classic twin coachline, pairing a 4.5 mm outer line with a 1.5 mm inner hairline separated by a 3 mm gap of basecoat gives crisp definition from both close up and across the street.
Should motorcycle tank decals be placed under or over the clearcoat?
Thin cast vinyl decals (50 microns / 2 mil), water-slide transfers, and painted stencils belong underneath fuel-resistant automotive clearcoat so petrol drips and microfibre cloths cannot snag the corners. Thick 3D resin badges, elastomeric knee grips, and removable track-day numbers go on top of fully cured clearcoat.
How much empty space should I leave around a tank badge inside a scalloped panel?
Leave a minimum margin equal to the height of the lettering—typically 20 mm to 30 mm of clear basecoat—between the tips of the badge and the inner pinstripe of the panel.
Colour Palettes & Protective Finishes
How do I stop a multi-colour paint scheme from fighting the engine and exhaust finishes?
Treat your engine cases, frame paint, and exhaust headers as part of the colour scheme from day one. If your bike has warm bronze wheels or golden stainless headers, echo that warmth in your 10% pinstripe accent rather than introducing an unrelated cool silver stripe.
Can I combine matte and gloss finishes on the same fuel tank without decals?
Yes. Spraying the entire tank in a single basecoat colour, clearing the whole panel in gloss, curing and scuffing, and then masking off graphics to spray a flattened matte clear over selected zones creates a sophisticated dual-sheen "ghost" pattern.
How do I protect a matte or satin tank where my knees grip the flanks?
Repeated leather or textile friction will eventually polish a matte clearcoat into a patchy semi-gloss sheen. Plan from the outset to apply either pre-cut matte paint protection film (PPF) or dedicated rubber tank traction pads inside the knee recesses once the paint has fully outgassed.
